About this lesson

Vedic Maths (from the Sanskrit Veda, knowledge, and Ganita, mathematics) is a system of mental-calculation methods built on 16 sutras, or short rules, and 13 sub-sutras. Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha (1884–1960) collected them, and his book Vedic Mathematics was published in 1965. Children learn to add, subtract, multiply, divide and square numbers in fewer steps, which builds speed, accuracy and confidence in school maths.

Key points

  • Veda + Ganita: the meaning of “Vedic Maths”
  • Where the 16 sutras come from
  • Six benefits: speed, brain power, confidence, self-checking, creativity and fun
